New Juaben South MP to participate in peace conference

Koforidua, May 14, GNA - Mrs Beatrice Bernice Boateng, Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, last Sunday left for Antigua, Guatemala to participate in a three-day conference dubbed; “Women Redefining Democracy for Peace, Justice and Equality.”

A statement issued from her office in Koforidua said Mrs Boateng would contribute towards creating a more peaceful and just world for women worldwide.

The three-day international strategy meeting is expected to bring together about 90 women’s rights activists, researchers, communications experts, politicians and key policy-makers from national and international institutions alongside Nobel Laureates.

They would examine the challenges of democracy, democratization and democratic movements through the lens of women’s rights and peace around the world.

The statement mentioned specific themes to be discussed to include conflicts, post-conflict and militarization, violence against women from state repression to domestic violence, the role of the judiciary, corruption and systemic discrimination.

Participants are to join six Nobel Peace Laureates; Jody Williams, Shirin Ebadi, Wangari Maathai, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan Maguire to examine democratic movements in order to understand and acknowledge how women around the globe are resisting violence, authoritarianism, corruption and weakened formal democracies.

The statement said in the past two years, the Nobel Laureates had brought attention to urgent issues including the Iran-US tensions, women’s rights in Iran, climate crisis and the protracted Burmese and Sudanese conflicts using the print media, radio, internet and public forums.
